Pasadena Collaborative Literacy Project
Child Care Information Service is the lead organization of a multi-year collaborative project funded by First 5 LA. The Pasadena Collaborative Literacy Project (PCLP) is a community partnership focused on improving early childhood literacy. The project includes two semester-long college level courses for providers offered in partnership with Pacific Oaks College, focused on developing a literacy curriculum and promoting young children's literacy learning and development within early childhood settings.
The Collaborative consists of six community partners: Child Care Information Service, Pacific Oaks College, the Frostig Center, Center for Community and Family Service (CCFS), Pasadena Public Library and UCLA Center for Improving Child Care Quality. Enrollment consists of 100 providers per year in the CCIS service area and Glendale.
The Project includes on-site mentoring to support the providers in their learning and growth and in implementing early literacy knowledge and ideas. The mentors, all experienced early childhood professionals, have been an integral connection to the providers. This support has helped providers successfully complete the course, integrate what they have learned into practice, and feel empowered to strive towards higher education goals.
The PLCP project has been very successful at creating an accessible pathway for professional development and in connecting early childhood teachers and providers to a higher education program designed specifically for them. It has also resulted in strong community partnerships and a dedication to collaborative work between early childhood and higher education partners.
